THE ANNA WAS THE FIRST to speak, once we reached the three of them. âIâm very sorry that you were attacked. I am looking into whether any of my people were experimenting or playing with their powers upstream, foolishly forgetting to make sure no one further downriver would be affected. If I find such an accident occurred, I promise you I will properly chastise those responsible.â
Right, because I was totally sure heâd find evidence of this âaccidentâ and âchastiseâ the guilty. Why did that refrain sound familiar to me?
I glanced at Luca, expecting to see the same disbelief from him. But he was busy watching the man next to the Anna, the one we hadnât met yet.
âI understand that your concerns are elsewhere, but we must beg your indulgence. This is Elissa,â he said, holding out a beckoning hand to the girl. She eyed that hand for a moment, before hesitantly stepping forward, without letting the other man go. âShe is quite young, but quite gifted. To facilitate her learning, she has been accompanying her father to the fields to observe him work. Now Matten, he has heard about your agricultural complexâs decision to keep nonessential visitors away. And he tells me he would no longer bring Elissa with him, to comply. But surely this is silly.â
I blinked at the Anna. Thatâs what he thought was silly?
The man had literally called us out here after weâd survived a murder attempt to complain about a little girl not having access to our agricultural fields. Where our food supply was in the process of being destroyed. Was he for real?
âBut I assured him,â he continued, âthat once you understood what she could do, you would of course agree she should continue with her training. Elissa, if you please.â
The kid looked up at the stranger, Mattenâpresumably, her fatherâand he gave her a reluctant nod. Her gaze passed over Luca, then Pradip, and finally settled on me. Which did not fill me with confidence, because I had no idea what exactly this âunderstanding what she could doâ thing would entail.
I became hyperaware of the dryness in my throatâa sign that maybe I needed to replenish some of my fluids even before Elissa did whatever she was planningâand the moist layers of perspiration scattered across my skin.
The beads of sweat on my forehead practically started tingling, and a twinge of movement right in front of my face caught my eyeâas a droplet of clear liquid floated away from me, suspended in midair.
I drew back, with an instinctive sense of alarm at what was happening in front of me. It took a moment to process that the tingling Iâd felt wasnât just psychological. Elissa had been using her powers to lift the sweat off my forehead and into the air.
Which was freaky and maybe a little gross. (Not to mention, no one had even bothered to ask for my permission before using magical powers on my face.)
My sudden movement drew Luca and Pradipâs attention to meâtheyâd
